Reading a Recipe
How to scan a YeastCoast family and variant without missing the important bits.
A public recipe on YeastCoast is a family with one or more variants. The family holds the shared idea (style, title, story). Each variant is a concrete bill and process you can brew.
What to read first
- Title and style — the intent of the beer.
- Method — extract, extract + steeping, partial mash, or all-grain.
- Batch size — every amount scales from this volume.
- Calculated stats — OG, FG, ABV, IBU, SRM when present. Treat nulls as unknown, not zero.
Ingredients and process
Work top to bottom: fermentables → hops → yeast → misc. Note use stage (mash, boil, dry hop) and times. Process notes and mash steps are part of the recipe — not optional flavor text.
Variants vs brew logs
A variant is the plan. A brew log in The Cellar is what happened in the real world. Keep them separate when you compare batches.
